To make it easier to adjust the tickover

But you can't tickle it easily, that would happen more often than adjusting the t/o.

I know. The nearest that I had to a choke on a monobloc was a circular louvre that could be rotated to close on the Arrow. As we all know, it was a two stroke so it needed a choke wheras a typical 4 stroke just needed the tickler to give a rich starting mixture especially if the float level was set slightly low giving a normally slightly weak run.
