had a CB72 a long time ago and my mate had a CB77 which could piss all over it, performance wise with only another 58cc or so to play with.

Joking aside Ric, when I was over Chells on Saturday looking at a 125 to buy, we had a long conversation about this. I was going to get a Yamaha which he sells, he also sells chinese easy riders for 500 quid less, and said buy whatever you like they both come out of china! I couldnt believe it but he showed me and has been a main dealer for Honda Yamaha Suzuki and Kawasaki (dropped them now) since the late 1960's.
He reckons one of the drivers that brings the bikes told him containers were going into Hinkley from China with bikes in. Cyril said to the driver, no mate youre wrong it'll be components, but the driver was adamant apparently, it was bikes! But maybe the driver was confused and meant Thailand? You can still buy a Jap built 125 I think but that'd be a Varadero at around £3500.
Incidentally I test rode a Honda CG125 (made in Turkey) and a Chink Easy Rider, there was no real difference, apart from the price, the Jap was 1400 quid on an 08 from a school, the easy rider was brand new at 1200 quid on the road!

Couldn't have bin much worse.
Japs may be twats (are) but their bikes are ok. Chinks should stick to chopsticks and brazilians to nuts - or shaved fannys.

He's found a place that do all the 125 and then the 500 training in a week on their bikes. So he won't need to buy a bike just for the licence.

OK,what does he want the bike for? fun, commuting,a mixture?What will he feel comfortable riding, what budget etc.

True enough. I'm missing gears all over the fucking place and brakes don't exist!

The thing is, Japanese are so easy to ride. Snick it in to gear and off you go.
The brakes work.
Tyres and handling are alright now.
The enfield is perfectly accepatable as long as you ride it remembering that it is a vintage bike. Whenever it was manufactured.
Maybe not the best for a new bloke. Mind you you could take the other attitude and say he might as well learn to ride properly!!
None of this sports bike bollocks where they scream out of the corner then "thruppeny bit" around the next bend as although the bike is fast they can't RIDE.
Are you old enough to have had one of the old mopeds where you never let off the throttle? You didn't brake as there wasn't much acceleration! lol

i learned to ride on a '81 RD125 (185 special
)... pre-YPVS, where the clutch isn't a clutch but a torque converter. the lads all farted off on their cbx550s, yzf's and gixxers. had to keep up SOMEHOW! there wasn't alot of braking involved. 
takes a certain age to ride the old stuff. it's better to learn to handle a nice bike and raise the difficulty. i don't think about the rider but the bike when saying this.
