Minimilist touring.

Post by Bill (the boss) on Thu Dec 29, 2011 9:22 am

Next year I am gonna do one of my 'bucket list' jobbies, tour the UK, well some of it. As usual I will be strapped for cash so will want to do it on a shoestring.
Fuel is eyewateringly expensive, so to cut down on costs in that department I reckon save weight. What does the panel reckon is the minimum I can get away with in 'stuff' that I will have to take?

Cooking stuff
Tea making stuff (goes with the cooking stuff)
Clothes
Wash kit
Tent
sleeping bag
Basic grub to last 2 days (can top up as and when)

I can't think of anything else, can you?

First of all. Lose some weight. YOU!!!!
Then look at the bike/car whatever and take the minimum stuff as lugging extra stuff costs fuel. If you haven't got the vehicle yet, consider a petrol engined vehicle with lpg fitted, it works out cheaper than die***.
You can get a small gas water hotter cheaply HERE (clicky) and a lightweight kettle at camping shops, but that means carrying water (weight!) so maybe just buy the occasional cuppa as & when - lots of butty vans around on major 'A' roads. A lightweight 2 man tent (you may get lucky or might just wish to turn over at night!) with a small area/flyscreen to heat food/water etc. A couple of clothes changes (visit laundrettes to clean them) so make all clothes similar colour or you might end of with pink knickers. I would suggest a sleeping bag that zips all round so if it's hot, you can get cool. The arctic ones make you sweat like a bastid if it's not cold. BTW, have you tried that 'instant' powdered tea? My bro in law reckons it's the nuts, and water doesn't have to boil to make a cuppa. Steal lots of sugar and milk thingies from tesco/wherever when you go shopping. Make sure the vehicle (is that what the combo is going to do?) is well serviced before you start in the interests of economy & reliability.

No1s and 2s as well as washing can be done at services or mcdonalds/morrisons/tesco free of charge.

Oh, noodles (and a tin of something else) are quick, light and cheap as well as filling (not sure about nourishing!).
That should give you a start. When are you planning this tour so I can make sure I'm away/at home when you come a knockin?!!!

if you ask me nicely i might be able to sort you out some military rations (you know the boil in the bag stuff. 1 box (small shoe box size) is complete with a full days food breakfast, lunch, dinner, choccy, drinks pack containing tea coffee, whitener, sugar and various bits and bobs aswell.

Bill's a growing lad - he might need 2 or 3 a day.

That sidecar might need greedy boards on and make it a couple of feet higher!!!
