What's happening in 550 land
Managed to get in the garage and do some more shifting today.
I think all the black bits will be going to Metal Magic this week and pick them up in the new year. At least that'll give me some more room in the garage.
Must get some better ventilation on the blast cabinet too, it certainly cleans the crap off ally casings when there are new glass beads in the thing, but makes alot of dust as the seals are crap.
I need to blank off the garden end of the covered in hardstanding down the side of the house and get the M and donor K in there so I can actually work in the garage without tripping over meself too.
Pity I haven't got all the original engine from the J, no cases or gearbox, so that's why the donor K will be donating its engine and some other bits. Surprising how much changed between the models.
For those not from round here, Metal Magic is a company in Barnsley who do powder coating Clicky linky here
I've used them to do the wheels and wheel carrier on the car and they do an excellent job. I've heard good reports from the local bike community about work on wheels and frames, so I'll give them a go and see what the job is like. I'll post pics later.
I want to do some myself, so the small stuff will be stripped in my little tonty blast cabinet and sprayed in the garage - stuff like the triple tree and battery/tool holders. If I cock it up, I'll not tell anyone and let MM do it properly!!! The top of the Alloy triple tree might be polished and laquered, not decided yet.
I had a play with the blaster today and cleaned a casing that I salvaged from my original J model that I came off in October 1972 at the end of Crellin Street in Barrow during a visit to Crookes and been in a cupboard since. 40 years of crap and cobwebs takes some shifting, let me tell you!
Thinking back, the nurses in North Lonsdale hospital were very nice and looked after me and my broken leg well........The car was a write off - the crash bars did their job, but caused the broken leg. Can't win them all I suppose.
The genny casing was really grotty, but cleaned up nice. It'll take some work to get the gouges out, but it's one of the 'proper' ones that are embossed 'SUZUKI' rather than the later ones with stickers. I haven't got a proper buffing wheel setup yet, so that's on the cards too.
I think my main Christmas prezzy to myself will be an Ultrasonic cleaner - it's just deciding on the size - do I get a biggun that will take a set of carbs or a clutch casing or a little 'un that will do a single carb. The biggun looks favourite at the mo'. We'll see what the bosses' bonus comes out like, that'll be the real decider

Cheap ultrasonics aint worth having. You are better off with a old fashioned parts cleaner like what I have got. I love my buffing set up though.

Keep the updates going - I always had a soft spot for the two stroke triples having grown up around them - I'd ridden mate's 380s and 550s but never owned one.

Not the food ones, they're ok.
I mean the computer ones. They are the work of the devil and they ain't going on my 'puter. I delete them before they go on, and if a site insists on using them for my 'better browsing experience' then it's the sort of site I can do without.

I use it all the time. It prevents your data being seen. It also stops all those targeted ads.
Down side is that you have to pause it if you wish to look at video in the Daily Telegraph!

Re: What's happening in 550 land
Got the K frame back from the powder coaters complete with swing arm, top & bottom yokes, battery box and handlebar clamps. The centre stand had cracked so I had to get that welded. Dropped that off today andd should be done later this week. 'Unfortunately' there won't be much progress in the next 4 weeks as I go to Egypt for a week scuba diving with the 'lads' on Saturday, then a week after I get back, off to Lanzarote with the other half - got to keep her sweet!
Still lots to do but hopefully start the rebuild in a month and then get cracking with it. I reckon I have most parts, but probably there 'may' be something that needs rebuild/renew/swearing at during the latter part!

I'll send a scarab beetle stuck to it instead of a stamp so it may take some time to get to yours.

Got more stuff sorted today and got a headlamp (NOS off eblob) plus tank, headlamp ears and side panels ready for painting. I reckon the the J and spare K will be going to the new lockup at work so I can get on with the resto work of the first K.
Hopefully will eventually look something like this:

Re: What's happening in 550 land
A bit brighter than that, but basically that's it. I don't intend keeping this one and hoping it will part fund the next two restos. I've got most of what I need, it's just time and paint basically, but I ain't got too much time spare and can't paint to the standard I need. The next one will be black and the last one will be gold.
