Re: Suzuki GT550A rebuild
Ended up at the Classic TT and now looks like this. I do love this bike.

Re: Suzuki GT550A rebuild
Well the old 550 threw the teddy well out of the cot and was burning oil badly on the right pot. Turned out the crank seals were shot - and so were the crank bearings - and gearbox bearings too. As was the right cylinder due to the gudgeon pin circlip escaping and ballsing up the (nikasil plated) bore & piston.
Had the crank redone and fitted a spare gearbox and after quite a lot of faffing about due to all this kung flu, the bike is running again, albeit with a bit of clutch slip over about 6k rpm. Otherwise it's sweeter and faster. More details on the link on the first post, including the hydraulically operated clutch I built.
I do love two strokes (most of the time!!)

Replaced it. I'd done a favour for a mate (in Canterbury!) and he had a new spare with new piston.
I do have loads of 550 spares, but typically, not the one I needed.

Re: Suzuki GT550A rebuild
Still have this bike and made a few changes after the rebuild last year. The two bearings behind the short points cam drive went tata and knackered the right outer crank bearing & seal, so did a full engine strip and replaced the crank. Found the original gearbox bearings were dud too, so fitted a 'spare' B gearbox which has slightly closer ratios. Put standard clocks on due to the electronic tacho doing whatever it wanted, led headlamp, hydraulic operated clutch and lifted the gearing so it doesn't rev as high in top. Doesn't seem to make much difference to acceleration though - still bloody quick for a 45 year old bike!
